Frances McDormand was born Cynthia Ann Smith in Gibson City, Illinois. She was adopted at the age of one, and her name was changed to take the last name of her adoptive parents. She moved frequently as she grew up as her father’s work was to help restore failing congregations for the Disciples of Christ. She graduated from high school in Monessen, PA. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bethany University in West Virginia, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama.
