Traveling can be a fun adventure, but thereâ€™s no doubt that everything about it disrupts your normal life. When youâ€™re jetting around for business purposes, your schedule might be extra tight, which can lead to unhealthy eating habits and a forgotten exercise routine. In order to keep your pants from becoming extra tight, there are a few things you can do to keep fit on the road.
1. Pack it in, Not on
No matter what method of transportation youâ€™re using to get from Point A to Point B, youâ€™re going to need to eat on the way. Airports, train stations, and mini-marts all offer a selection of tempting foods to fill you up, but they may not be the wisest choices for staying fit. Instead of splurging on convenience food, pack your own healthy meals and snacks.
There are all kinds of quick and easy choices in the grocery store, and you might already have some in your pantry. Whole grain crackers with ready-to-eat tuna, string cheese, protein bars, and fresh fruit are all good choices. Healthy nuts such as plain almonds are terrific for curbing your appetite, and give a satisfying crunch too. If you need a cookie break, look for healthy ones such as those made by hampton creek. Natural foods taste best and are good for you, too.
2. Stay Hydrated
If you normally drink a lot of water during the day, be sure to continue this healthy habit while traveling. Bottled water is easy to pack in your brief case, so toss a couple of them in there each morning before your first meeting. During the day, avoid high-calorie drinks such as sweetened tea, cappuccino, and regular soda. Water can get boring, so vary the routine with a nice cup of herbal tea or coffee with low-fat milk.
3. Work in a Workout
Itâ€™s not easy to fit a full-blown exercise routine into your already-jammed schedule, but there are many great ways to work off a few calories during the course of the day. Try to squeak at least two of these ideas into your itinerary.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Carry your own bags.
Walk instead of calling a cab.
Do a set of push-ups or sit-ups in your room upon rising.
4. Schedule Some Real Exercise
In addition to the nifty workout ideas above, be sure to get some strenuous exercise, too. Most hotels offer a fitness center, so use it. If the equipment is unfamiliar, ask for help, and donâ€™t do anything that doesnâ€™t feel safe for your level of fitness. Hotel swimming pools are perfect for a workout. If you feel like youâ€™re in a fitness rut at home, now is your chance to try something new. Ask the hotel concierge to schedule a personal trainer for you; you might be surprised at how many moves you can learn in just one session.
5. Take Time for Yourself
Attending business meetings can take a toll on your mind as well as your body. In addition to eating right and exercising, you might feel more refreshed and centered if you take time away from the crowd and just breathe. Depending on personal preference, there are many ways to sneak in time for yourself. An hour in your room with a good book, a long, quiet walk in a park, or just a few minutes of thoughtful meditation throughout the day are all good ideas.
6. Eat Right All Day Long
Restaurant food isnâ€™t designed to keep your waistline trim. Pasta, heavy sauces, and oversized steaks are not your friend when traveling. Instead of giving into temptation, order lean meats that are grilled, steamed or baked. Chicken and fish are the best choices, as they taste great when prepared healthfully. Be careful about ordering the right side dishes, too. Baked potatoes with all the fixings are probably not the wisest choice. Instead, go with wild rice and steamed vegetables. And remember a great rule of thumb: Never eat two unhealthy meals in the same day.
Staying fit on the road can be a challenge, but with the right mindset, it is possible. Before your next big trip, practice making good health choices at home. Get in the habit of packing healthy snacks and bottled water in your briefcase. Give the elevator at your office a break and get to know the staircase. Study the area around your hotel before you arrive, and make a fitness plan that works for you.
