In the consumer rush to find the best deals and discounts, most people don’t take a moment to consider the true meaning of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday of observance dedicated to showing respect to every American military member, from the past to the present day, who gave their lives in defense of the United States.

It is very easy to forget its significance in the commerce-driven digital age. After all, whenever we are reminded of Memorial Day in a public fashion, it is usually because we are bombarded with retail advertisements about Memorial Day sales and discounts. Or, most people treat Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer and a three-day weekend opportunity to barbecue.

No, this is not just cynical commentary. A recent Harris Poll/University of Phoenix research survey found that over 45% of Americans have no clue why Memorial Day is observed. Over 3% think that Memorial Day is the official start of summer. About 27% believe that the holiday is for honoring veterans, while another 5% think its for active duty members.

Americans will spend over $36 billion shopping and traveling on Memorial Day. Most people will spend about $500 on the holiday. More people can take time to help active duty, veterans, disabled veterans, and their families learn about discounts and deals that apply to them. While we expressly observe Memorial Day to honor the fallen, we can also take the time to show respect to members of the military in our lives.

Call Before You Go

It is always a good idea to check the fine print on military discounts and deals for arriving and trying to redeem them. Businesses who make such Memorial Day offers usually have exacting conditions, exclusions, time limits, and redemption guidelines. Call ahead and ask before arriving. Better to be safe than embarrassed.
