How to Find A Law Firm: Part Two

Lawyers aren’t exactly on the top of the list for services we want to need, but occasionally we do need them. And when it comes to finding a law firm to work with, there are a lot of options out there. So, how do you find the right law firm?

Admittedly, it can be a challenge to weed out the firms you don’t want to work with. But at the end of the day, there are a few ways you can track down the right lawyer for you.

Ask Around for Law Firm Referrals

Chances are you have a friend or family member who’s already dealt with a similar situation to you, or perhaps they know someone who has. They might even know someone who works for a law firm in the practice area that you’re looking for. Personal recommendations are great. It’s much easier to feel confident in a decision to use a specific law firm or lawyer when someone you trust has used them before.

However, not everyone’s comfortable asking their friends and family, so there are a few other ways you can find a law firm.

Use a State Bar Directory

A lawyer’s official credentials come from their respective state bars, so naturally, your state bar has a directory of lawyers who are eligible to practice in your state. The search function for most state bar associations allows you to search or lookup lawyers by practice area. So, if you’re looking for a family lawyer or need someone to help you with a criminal matter, you can search that way.

That said, not every state has an official lawyer directory, but the American Bar Association (ABA) has a list of state bar association lawyer directories and search bars for you to use.

If you’re in a state that has no official directory listed with the ABA, search for the state’s bar association website and they will typically have lawyer referral information. You can also verify a lawyer or a law firm through your state bar.

Lawyer Referral Services

Speaking of bar associations that don’t have directories, but have lawyer referral services, these too can be great ways to find yourself a law firm. Like directories, most state bars also have lawyer referral services (especially in cases where they don’t have official directories) that can help point you in the direction of a law firm or two that you can contact.

The lawyer referral service for a state bar typically provides you with a contact number that you can reach out to. They sometimes also have a list of law firms in specific counties that can provide you with your needed services, and handy contact information and their website so you can get ahold of them.

Do an Internet Search

Most lawyers nowadays have websites accessible via a simple internet search engine, and conducting a simple search will bring you a whole host of options for lawyers. You can search “league city family lawyer” or even “Los Angeles entertainment lawyer” and you’ll likely find pages and pages of options.

Finding a law firm to work with does not have to be nerve-wracking or challenging. You can find your next lawyer with just a few clicks or phone calls.
