Here’s How Costco Keeps Employees Happy
Costco has made Glassdoor’s list of “Best Places to Work” for a few years in a row now. The warehouse retail store has a loyal customer base and even more loyal staff members. If you’re like me and wondering how they keep staff so cheery, it is because most people who work there are highly satisfied with their jobs. Why? Well, here’s how Costco keeps employees happy.
They Offer Great Pay
When compared to other retail positions, Costco is paying its staff members well. Base pay for entry-level employees averages around $13 per hour. Food managers can make as much as $50 per hour, on average. Average salaries across the staff range from $20,000 to $138,000, though the folks making six figures are pharmacists. The wages and appreciation the company shows its staff is one of the number one reasons employees are so happy working there.
The Benefits Are Amazing
In addition to great wages, Costco offers its employees some pretty fantastic benefits too. You become eligible for health coverage after working 180 days (at least 24 hours per week). On top of that, you can choose your own health care provider, which is unheard of with most company-provided health insurance. Dental and prescription coverage through the organization is decent too.
Outside of the health benefits, Costco employees also start to accumulate paid time off after one year of working there. You receive one week paid on your one-year work anniversary. From your second to the fourth year, you receive two weeks of paid time off. The max amount of PTO is five weeks, given at 15 years tenure. Costco also provides employees with a 401(k) plan with matching contributions up to $500 per year.
Positive Work Environment
If you’ve ever worked in retail you know that a positive work environment is hard to come by. Somehow, Costco is able to provide that for its staff members. As for how Costco keeps employees happy with the environment, many past and present employees said that the workplace is always well-organized. They also felt appreciated and supported by managers.
There is Room to Grow
Another great perk of working for Costco is that there is room for advancement. Again, working in retail, advancement opportunities can be hard to find. About 76% of current Costco management started at an entry-level position. Having this available motivates many employees and keeps them happy with what they do.
Find Out How Costco Keeps Employees Happy Firsthand
Anyone looking for work would be smart to check and see if Costco is hiring. There are a number of different positions and career opportunities available. However, competition for jobs at the wholesale retailer is stiff. People don’t often leave because of the great benefits. Being persistent about following up on your application is key.
Fill out your application online. Once that is complete, you will be asked to provide a clean drug test. Then, if you are hired, you will likely start out on the floor stocking shelves. Eventually, you can work your way up, increasing your earnings along the way.
At the end of the day, how Costco keeps employees happy is easy. They provide them with the resources they need to lead positive, healthy lives inside and outside of the workplace.
