All The Bells and Whistles: 9 Features You Should Look for in Your Next Vehicle
It’s easy to get caught up with all of the small things when you are buying a new car. You want something that is stylish and meets your needs. If you are a “car guy” like me, you might also be looking at aesthetics and performance. That said, there is a wide range of other car features that are designed to enhance the vehicle’s safety, comfort, and convenience that you should also look for. Whether you’re upgrading for safety or looking for the latest tech, knowing what to prioritize is key. Here are nine features I believe are must-haves if you’re in the market for a new car.
1. Blind Spot Monitoring: Eyes Where You Can’t See
Blind-spot monitoring is a must for me now and most newer cars have this feature. Having this makes lane changes and merges much safer. The car will alert you to anything that may be in your blind spot with a visual or audible warning. Many cars will also provide feedback like vibrations in the steering wheel or seat to get your attention as well. This feature can make your car safer all around, and that’s backed by statistics. The rate of crashes for vehicles with blind-spot monitoring was 18% lower than those without the feature. Additionally, the rate of injury-causing accidents for these vehicles decreased by 24%.
2. Forward Collision Warning: Stay Alert, Stay Safe
Forward Collision Warning (FCW) uses sensors and cameras to monitor the distance between your vehicle and the one ahead. This is another safety feature that has really had an impact on accidents on the road. Studies have found that there are 43 to 68% fewer rear-end crashes, thanks to FCW and automatic emergency braking, which we’ll cover in the next point. These two systems often work together to help prevent you from crashing into the car in front of you. This is great for quick stops or traffic where you might not be paying the best attention. If you prioritize safety, this car feature should be at the top of your list.
3. Automatic Emergency Braking: An Extra Layer of Protection
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) takes safety a step further by applying the brakes automatically if a collision is imminent. As mentioned above, having this technology along with FCW in cars has reduced rear-end crashes significantly. Many people have found it to be effective in urban settings where pedestrians and unpredictable traffic are common. The system can also detect cyclists and other obstacles, providing comprehensive protection for your vehicle and everyone inside. You might even save some money with AEB, as many insurance companies offer discounts for vehicles equipped with this feature.
4. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay: Seamless Smartphone Integration
We’ve covered several safety features now, but there are some other car features you should consider as well. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will allow you to connect your smartphone to your vehicle’s infotainment system. This integration provides access to apps like navigation, music streaming, and messaging directly on the car’s display. It also enables you to use voice commands to make calls, send texts, and control media without taking your hands off the steering wheel. In many states, handling your phone while driving is illegal. So, this feature enhances safety and reduces your risk of getting a ticket. Honestly, it’s a must-have for anyone who relies on their smartphone, which is just about everyone these days.
5. Rearview Camera: See What’s Behind You
Rearview cameras have been a requirement in all vehicles since May 1, 2018. So, unless you’re looking for something older and used, your new car will likely have this feature in it. Some advanced versions will offer a 360-degree view of your surroundings so that you are aware of everything as you back out of a parking space or your driveway. It has been shown to reduce the risk of backing-related accidents by 17%. Honestly, once you have a backup camera, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one.
6. Parking Sensors: Perfect Your Parking
If you’re like my wife, you might hate parking. Squeezing into a tight space or, God forbid, parallel parking can be stressful for some drivers. Having parking sensors can help you maneuver these situations with ease. They use ultrasonic technology to detect nearby objects and they provide audible beeps when you are approaching something you might hit. The beeps get faster and louder the closer you get. Some cars will even provide you with visual feedback on the infotainment system for added precision. Overall, this car feature can help prevent minor collisions and fender benders in crowded parking lots. It’s a great thing to have.
7. Tire Pressure Monitoring System: Keep Your Tires in Check
This is another feature that has become more common on modern vehicles and, honestly, I wouldn’t buy a car without one today. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) will alert you when your tire pressure is too low. Your tires can have an impact on fuel efficiency and the overall safety of your car. Making sure they are properly inflated can also extend the life of the tire. More than that, it can help reduce the risk of blowouts and will improve the handling of your vehicle. A TPMS displays real-time pressure readings on your dashboard. Some newer systems even offer individual tire monitoring, which will eliminate any guesswork about which tire is low.
8. Bluetooth Connectivity: Hands-Free Convenience
We talked about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but Bluetooth connectivity is another important feature to have in your car. Again, this feature enables hands-free use of your devices, allowing you to focus on the road. For people who need to stay connected during their commute, this feature can be really useful. Many systems will even support multiple device connections, so passengers can share their music or take calls as well. If you value convenience and safety, Bluetooth is a must-have.
9. Adaptive Headlights: See Clearly, Drive Confidently
Adaptive headlights adjust their angle and brightness based on steering input, vehicle speed, and road conditions. These headlights illuminate curves and corners, improving visibility in low-light conditions. They also reduce glare for oncoming drivers, enhancing safety for everyone on the road. Adaptive headlights are particularly beneficial for nighttime driving and in areas with poor street lighting. By providing better illumination, they help reduce the risk of accidents. It’s a feature that shouldn’t be overlooked when you’re buying a new car.
Elevate Your Driving Experience
At the end of the day, the right features can make a huge difference in your driving experience. Whether you prioritize safety or functionality, each of these nine car features is a must-have in the modern world. Are there any features your car has today that you couldn’t live without? Let me know in the comments.
