7 HVAC Mistakes That Are Wasting Your Money

As spring approaches, many people are going to have their HVAC systems checked before the warmer weather arises. This system plays a crucial role in keeping your home comfortable. However, there are several mistakes you can make as a homeowner that are just a waste of money. That said, avoiding these seven common HVAC mistakes can potentially save you hundreds of dollars every year. So, take note!
1. Neglecting Regular Maintenance
Like anything else in your home, your HVAC system needs to be regularly maintained. Things like dirty filters, clogged vents, and work-out components will make your system work harder. This can lead to it burning out. Routine check-ups can help you pinpoint small issues before they become expensive repairs. So, make sure you schedule an annual inspection with an HVAC professional. In the end, it will help extend the lifespan of your system.
2. Using the Wrong Thermostat Settings
This is something my wife and I had to learn the hard way (hello, $350 electric bill). A lot of the time your thermostat is set way too high or too low, which leads to excessive energy consumption. There’s no excuse for it in today’s day and age. Programmable thermostats and smart thermostats make it easy to keep your home at a consistent temperature. We like to set our thermostat to a higher temperature when we are away. Then (thanks to smart technology), we can program it to turn the temperature down about 30 minutes before we get home. You should also avoid turning the temp up or down for quick comfort. It really doesn’t speed anything up, it just runs your system harder.
3. Blocking Vents and Registers
Furniture, rugs, or curtains blocking vents can disrupt airflow and reduce efficiency. When airflow is restricted, your HVAC system has to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. This added strain increases energy consumption and shortens the lifespan of your unit. Regularly check that all vents and registers are open and unobstructed.
4. Ignoring Air Filter Replacements
A dirty or clogged air filter can severely impact your HVAC system’s performance. Filters trap dust, debris, and allergens, but when they become too dirty, airflow is restricted. This forces your system to work harder, leading to higher energy bills. Replacing your air filter every one to three months improves efficiency and air quality.
5. Not Sealing Air Leaks
Gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and ducts allow conditioned air to escape. This forces your HVAC system to work overtime, increasing your energy bills. Sealing leaks with weatherstripping or caulking improves insulation and reduces waste. Checking for leaks in the ductwork can prevent the loss of heated or cooled air. Ultimately, a well-sealed home retains temperature better, improving overall efficiency.
6. Running the HVAC System Constantly
Running your HVAC system non-stop not only increases energy costs but also causes unnecessary wear and tear. Many homeowners forget to turn off their systems when leaving for extended periods. Using ceiling fans or natural ventilation can help reduce reliance on HVAC. Setting a schedule with a programmable thermostat ensures efficient operation.
7. Overlooking Proper Insulation
Poor insulation forces your HVAC system to work harder to maintain temperature. Heat can escape during winter and seep in during summer, making temperature control difficult. Upgrading insulation in walls, attics, and crawl spaces improves efficiency. Checking for drafts and sealing gaps enhances your home’s ability to retain conditioned air.
Stop Wasting Money on HVAC Mistakes
Nobody wants to have issues with their HVAC unit. It can be extremely expensive and, sometimes, it can be avoided. As with anything else, regular maintenance and having an HVAC professional come to check your unit once a year will make a huge difference. So, before you turn on your air conditioning this year, make sure you check that you’re doing all of these things.
