The Home Office Upgrades Continue…
Fans of the Clever Dude will know that my family’s life has changed dramatically over the past few years. To cover a few highlights we went from living in a small high-rise apartment in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia to a quaint three-bedroom house in my wife and I’s hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. I totally changed professions from a full-time Porshe mechanic to a full-time writer and content developer. To top it all off, my wife blessed our family with our beautiful daughter. Ever since my career change, I have been making home office upgrades to handle our ever-changing needs, and today I have more to report.
Home Office Upgrades
The first things on the home office upgrade list were new computers. Fans of the site will also know that I am an avid video game player. I spent the last eight years playing on a first-generation Playstation 4 and desperately needed an upgrade. So, for myself, I got bought a Corsair Vengeance a7200 gaming PC. My wife had spent years working on either an outdated windows computer or a Macbook Pro that would nuke itself once a year and I would have to have it repaired. She deserved a quality machine so, I bought a Lenovo Legion Pro gaming laptop.
After acquiring the computers, we needed two sets of peripherals and by then I had totally fallen in love with Corsair as a brand. So naturally, everything came from their lineup. For myself, I bought a Corsair K95 Platinum keyboard. As for the wife, a Corsair K70 did the trick because she didn’t need the hotkeys and wanted something smaller. Throw in a couple of Corsair wireless mice and we were almost ready to go.
The Dark Times
Now that we had the electronics sorted out all we needed were a couple of good office chairs and we would be set. To quote my boyhood hero Jeremy Clarkson, I honestly thought “How hard could it be.” Boy was I wrong, the first set of chairs we bought were a couple of “gaming” branded chairs from Amazon. For the price of around $150, I assumed they would be fine. I mean, we were only going to be sitting in the chairs eight to 12 hours a day.
For a while, the Amazon chairs served their purpose. The chairs weren’t particularly comfortable but we made do. After a couple of months, the wife and I were comparing our aches and pains and we finally admitted to one another that our backs were broken. Both of our upper backs were in shambles and something had to be done.
I went on the hunt again for new chairs and after extensive research, everything pointed to “ergonomic” office chairs, instead of anything touted as being made for gaming. After a little searching, I found a couple of office chairs at Costco that had good reviews from computer programmers. Again, I assumed that if these nerds can sit in these chairs for hours on end so could I, but apparently not. A few more months went by and my wife and I had the same aches and pains discussion again and found something interesting.
Our original upper back and shoulderblade issues were gone but now our lower backs were the ones in tatters. The Costco chairs had zero support and were so bad I wrote an entire article ranting about the misery they caused my family. Again, I went on the hunt.
The Solution
At this point, I was at my wit’s end. I had to find a quality chair because, throughout all the suffering, my workload was only increasing and I was spending even more time at my desk. The solution I found that finally worked for me was a Secret Lab Titan Evo 2022 gaming chair. Yes, despite all the smack I talked about “gaming” chairs, Secret Lab is legit.
Is the Titan Chair the nicest place I’ve ever sat? No, I have driven Bentley’s. Does my back still feel like it belongs to an 80-year-old construction worker? The answer is also no. The thing is the human body was not designed to sit at a desk for 12 hours. No chair will alleviate all your aches and pains. I don’t care what your friend with a $1500 Herman Miller chair says.
However, if you want to be kind to yourself while working from home or playing video games, Secret Lab chairs are worth a look. It’ll run you $600+ but if you’re like me and spend 50+ hours in the chair every week, it’s worth it.
